Q: Как правильно перевести "приусадебный участок" в отличие от "дачного" и "садового" участка? Годится ли "private house plot" cf. "dacha, garden plot"? Имеется в виду постоянно испольяуемая земля (не фермерская, в размере от 5 до 50 соток) у частного дома в некрупном городе или в деревне под сад, огород, картошку, выпас козы, другие хоз нужды. Q: Почему в одних случаях запятая после вводного модального слова happily ставиться, а в других нет. Happily they will soon get justice done to them by an abler pen than mine. (War and the Future, by H. G. Wells) Happily I was enabled to do so some time ago. (Master Humphrey's Clock, by Charles Dickens) Happily, the damage was only slight. Этот раздел позволит Вам уточнить использование отдельных слов, а также слов и понятий с которыми они обычно используются а, в последствии, с моей помощью провести некий сравнительный анализ использования различных английских слов, которые обычно мы привыкли переводить на русский язык одним и тем же словом. Оригинальные тексты англоязычных авторов (или профессиональные переводы на английский не англоязычных) служат непревзойденным авторитетом в изучении языка, по крайней мере, для меня. С этой целью все примеры употребления тех или иных слов взяты из произведений классиков английской и американской литературы, а также из переводов известных произведений на английский язык.
multifarious – разный, различный, разнообразный

Этот раздел посвящен не грамматике английского языка как таковой, а ее нюансам и тем тонкостям, на которые большинство изучающих обычно не обращает внимания. Конечно, Вас могут понять и без знания этих нюансов, но разве можно, занимаясь чем-либо всерьез, не стремиться к совершенству!!
1. Конструкции с вводным there отличаются от соответствующих конструкций без there тем, что первые просто сообщают информацию, а последние призваны, кроме того, обеспечить физическое восприятие какого-либо предмета окружающей действительности:

As I recall, across the street there’s a grocery; I can see that across the street there’s a grocery. |
As you can see, across the street is a grocery; Over on the other side a little to the left (pointing at the object) is a shop. |
В сценических ремарках преимущественно используются конструкции без there:

Between this door and the stern gallery are bookshelves. |
2.Конструкции с вводным there не всегда употребляются для введения нового. Их подлежащее может обозначать и известное из предыдущего контекста:

BACON, BAY, BELIEF
bring home the bacon – добиться успеха, оказаться в выигрыше. 1) "You can give me the glad hand to-night, mister," he cried. "I'm bringing home the bacon at last."

bring (drive) to bay – загнать в угол, в тупик; припереть к стенке. 1) She answered him with a woman's desperate disregard of consequences when she is driven to bay. 2) At last the fugitive, hard-pressed, takes to a narrow passage and a court which has no thoroughfare. Here, against a hoarding of decaying timber, he is brought to bay and tumbles down, lying gasping at his pursuer, who stands and gasps at him until the woman comes up. 3) Jurgis and his gang joined in the sport, every man singling out his victim, and striving to bring him to bay and punch him.
hold at bay – держать к.л. в страхе, не подпускать. The cruel invasion of their country by Porter has alone furnished them with ample provocation; and I can sympathize in the spirit which prompts the Typee warrior to guard all the passes to his valley with the point of his levelled spear, and, standing upon the beach, with his back turned upon his green home, to hold at bay the intruding European.
keep smb at bay –держать к.л. под присмотром, под контролем. 1) The most terrible evils are just kept at bay by incessant efforts. 2) These thoughts, and her melancholy life so full of secret sorrows were like a mortal illness kept at bay for a time by remedies. 3) The woman had found a revolver in a table drawer in the room in which she had been locked, and now she kept the mate of the Kincaid at bay with the weapon. 4) These two books of sacred, and secular, passages for memory--will serve other good purposes besides merely occupying vacant hours: they will help to keep at bay many anxious thoughts, worrying thoughts, uncharitable thoughts, unholy thoughts. 5) Old Sir Guy sprang to his son's side, and so did Little John; and the four setting back to back, kept the sheriff and his men at bay till the bowmen came within shot and let fly their arrows among the sheriff's men, who, after a brief resistance, fled in all directions.
beyond belief – невероятно. 1) His irascibility was so far beyond belief that I will tell you nothing about it. 2) It was beyond belief to me how she rolled; in seemingly smooth water, the bell striking, the fittings bounding out of our state-room.
to the best of one’s belief – насколько к.л. известно. He lost all patience when he considered the laziness and want of charity of his squire Sancho; for to the best of his belief he had only given himself five lashes, a number paltry and disproportioned to the vast number required.
to save one’s bacon – спасти свою шкуру *** in the belief that… – с надеждой на то, что… *** popular / unpopular belief – популярное / непопулярное мнение *** erroneous/false/mistaken belief — ошибочное убеждение *** firm/strong/unshakable belief – твердое убеждение, вера.

This final comment for the year was going to be a brief but hearty review of our sector of the industry. After all there was plenty to be glad about in 2000. But as I write, news has come through of yet another accident, a Singapore Airlines B747 crashing in Taiwan, killing 81. Just a few months ago we saw the sickening images of the Air France Concorde crashing at Paris.
And so once again our minds are focused on the issue of safety. The subject is always paramount but it seems that we have to embrace it and nurture it with greater vigour. With massive predictions of growth in the industry, pressure on airlines to cut costs and shortages of pilots and engineers, there are ever greater challenges ahead. The doom scenario must not be allowed to spiral out of control.
Public concern at this frightening trend can to some degree be assessed by the appearance of a new web site: amigoingdown.com. Though the name may suggest otherwise, this is not a bad joke dreamed up by some on-line entrepreneur (although it does take advertising). This appears to be a serious site offering reassurance (of a kind) to nervous passengers. (There is a facility for posting questions, so I sent an email asking who operates the site and how many enquiries they receive. As yet I have had no reply.)
We are told that the information presented on screen derives from data published by the aviation authorities. Comfortingly it informs visitors that flying is extremely safe; indeed statistics show us that we would need to fly every day for 1,000 years before succumbing to a fatal accident.
Larger aircraft, statistically, provide passengers with better survival rates, and you can minimise risk further by choosing direct flights. Since 70% of incidents in recent years have occurred during take-off or landing, it follows that fewer take-offs and landings increase your chances of a safe journey. Travellers are also encouraged to take note of all that is presented to them by cabin crews prior to take-off. To be continued.

Данный раздел посвящен, так скажем, повторению пройденного, ибо чем больше мы с каждым днем изучения English узнаем о нем, тем больше шансов у нас благополучно забыть самые прописные истины:
1. Если действе совершается (продолжается) в момент речи. Действие или состояние является ограниченным во времени: What is she doing now? She is mixing a cake What is the orchestra playing?
2. Для выражения действий только захватывающих настоящий момент в своем протекании, но имеющих более широкие пределы. Всегда подразумевается ограниченность действия или предполагается, что наступит момент (наступил) конец действия (состояния). She is writing another novel. (Oна начала, но еще не кончила писать. Это действие продолжается, хотя в данный момент она может быть и не сидит за печатной машинкой.) It is still raining. (Bсe еще идет дождь.) He is playing in the 1st eleven this season.
3. Для выражения будущих планов: I am flying to Moscow tomorrow evening.
